Strengthening malaysia’s agri-food sector through global collaboration in digital transformation

Malaysia’s agriculture sector is undergoing a critical transformation. As part of the national push toward a digital economy and food security, there is a growing urgency to modernize agriculture.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is strengthening its core food production sectors by implementing initiatives powered by cutting-edge/Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technology and artificial intelligence (AI). There is strong optimism that AI adoption in the agriculture sector will enhance the sustainability of the national food supply policy and support large-scale production at reduced costs.
National efforts in AI-driven agriculture
Additionally, Malaysia is advancing AI for agriculture through a coordinated national push involving government, industry and innovation agencies: key efforts include MDEC’s Digital AgTech programme, which has deployed over 600 AI-powered systems to boost productivity and reduce costs for more than 30,000 farmers. The National AI Office (NAIO) recently launched the “Rakan Tani” initiative – an AI-enabled platform for farmers to access market matching, subsidies and financing via WhatsApp. Meanwhile, AI-driven solutions like drones, robotics and satellite-based monitoring are being adopted in plantations. Despite progress, challenges such as ageing farmer demographics and digital literacy persist, making inclusive training and support crucial to scaling impact.
Malaysia–India partnership: localising global solutions
Recognising the opportunities, C4IR Malaysia and C4IR India are exploring a collaboration of knowledge sharing/exchange, fostering responsible AI deployment across borders and catalysing AI solutions to aid Malaysia’s agricultural sector. This collaboration seeks to bring together government players, agencies and private sector stakeholders.
